A scientist developed an LED lightbulb that is not as attractive to insects as other lightbulbs, The New York Times reports. The development will not only be welcome news to those who like to sit on their porches during hot summer months, but a low-cost lifesaving solution to mosquitoes that transmit malaria. Travis Longcore is a professor at the University of Southern California who is working with Royal Philips, a company that develops lighting, among other products, to make a lightbulb that does not attract as many insects as the bulbs currently on the market. His research showed bugs preferred fluorescent bulbs, however his LED bulbs “could be adjusted to attract about 20 percent fewer” insects than the LED bulbs currently available, according to The New York Times.
