Off the Cuff: Celebrate the Industry All Year

As has been tradition for nearly 40 years, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) declared April National Pest Management Month (NPMM). Holding it when spring is in full swing (and the mosquitoes are, too), makes a lot of sense when you think about how much timely potential there is for the local media to capitalize on such how-to topics as “pest-proofing your home,” “protecting your family from tick-borne diseases” and “hiring a quality exterminator.” This year, NPMM got an extra publicity boost from home improvement guru Bob Vila as its spokesman.

If you missed out this April, don’t worry. The Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), NPMA’s consumer and media outreach arm, also created Bed Bug Awareness Week (June 7-14) and Rodent Awareness Week (Nov. 15-21) for your marketing benefit between now and 2016. Plus, Termite Awareness Week should pop up again in mid-March. Visit NPMAPestworld.org/techresources/NPMM.cfm for tips about how to spread the word.

But quite frankly, I think every month should be pest management month: Employees should be celebrated for their hard work; manufacturers and distributors should be thanked for the innovation that goes into today’s tools; and educators and researchers should be commended for their efforts in training and learning.
