’Tis the season to be jolly and generous, as Hanukkah and Christmas are just around the corner. How does your company celebrate? We here at Pest Management Professional (PMP) are treated to a festive holiday party and time at home the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
If you’re thankful for the hard work your employees do all year long, get into the holiday spirit and show your appreciation. Here are five suggestions.
1. Throw a party. You could opt for a low-key affair for employees only or a big bash that includes family members. Either way, make it festive with drinks, appetizers and desserts.
2. Take a break. Give your employees an extra day or two off during the holiday season. It would be a welcome gift for those who have last minute shopping to do or just want to spend time with family.
3. Share a meal. Treat your employees to lunch or breakfast. Take everyone out or order in. Even if it’s something simple, like pizza or sandwiches and bagels or donuts, your employees will appreciate the gesture.
4. Get out and about. Plan an out-of-office excursion, like a trip to a movie theater, bowling alley or sporting event. Sometimes it’s good to get away from the office and enjoy some downtime together.
5. Give a gift. Do not exclude anyone; if you feel someone doesn’t deserve a gift, take up the issue during a performance review. Steer clear of calendars, mugs or pens with the company logo because these aren’t the kind of gifts that show you care. Instead, consider giving cash or gift cards, but be aware that the IRS considers them wages so they will be subject to withholding taxes. Other possibilities include baskets of food or boxes of candy, or tickets to sporting events or concerts. Note that gifts of low value given infrequently are not subject to tax under the IRS’ de minimis fringe benefit definition, so there’s no need for Scrooge-like behavior.
Whichever way you choose to celebrate, be sure to take a moment to thank your employees for their hard work and dedication. Let them know they deserved something extra this year. After all, where would you be without them?
