In Memoriam: Katherine Matthews

Katherine MatthewsKatherine Matthews, co-founder of Columbia, S.C.-based Modern Exterminating Co., passed away Oct. 4, 2016 — a day after her company’s 61st anniversary. She was 92.

Matthews and her late husband, George Sr., founded Modern Exterminating in 1955 and it remains the oldest family-owned pest management firm in Columbia. She retired in 2011. Matthews was also a founding member of the Zonta Club of Columbia, a board member of the Columbia Music Festival Association, and the benefactor of a dance studio at the USC School of Dance.

Grandson G. Glenn Matthews III continues his grandparents’ legacy of promoting Modern Exterminating as a company that offers “corporate-level services backed by small-business values.”

Memorials may be made to the Clemson University Foundation for The George G. Matthews, Sr. Endowment for Humanities Library Resources (B2081), P.O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633.
