Ty HawkinsTy Hawkins, co-owner of Mantis Pest Solutions in Lees Summit, Mo., has always been told that preparation is essential to bed bug treatments. As the BedBug Central scholarship winner, he’ll have a chance this winter to learn a bed bug treatment protocol centered on contradicting this notion.

As the winner of BedBug University’s free scholarship contest, Hawkins receives an all-expense-paid, four-day trip to Lawrenceville, N.J., to attend Bed Bug Boot Camp. There, he’ll have a chance to join other attendees in both the classroom and the field to get an immersive lesson in BedBug Central’s NO PREP protocol.

“Prep is a big obstacle,” Hawkins says. “It’s a big challenge making sure the individual is prepped properly, and a lot of the time it delays service when they aren’t ready.”

But it isn’t just about making things run a bit more smoothly for Hawkins. He is also concerned about the burden that having to prep puts on his customers.

“It’s really a hassle for some customers,” the 18-year industry veteran says. “They end up paying more to have someone else come in and do the prep because they can’t manage themselves.”

Terry Rice, one of the technicians who take Boot Camp attendees into the field for BedBug Central to learn about No Prep services, says he really enjoys teaching people what he does.

“My favorite thing about Boot Camp is seeing their faces when I show them new techniques that are simple, but get the infestation under control quickly,” he adds.

And when all the business is said and done, as Hawkins notes, “Bed bugs are the type of service, that when you do it well, you know you’re really helping people.”

Hawkins’ scholarship is valued at around $4,000. He plans to attend the February 2018 boot camp session, for which BedBug Central is currently enrolling students now.
