It's not often that one of our Hometown Heroes gets recognition for going to jail. But that's what happened to our June Hometown Hero, April Smith. Smith, the owner of Cape Ann Pest Control in Rockport, Mass., was "jailed" as part of a jail-and-bail fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Smith was recruited by an anonymous caller to participate.

Pest Management Professional is recognizing two employees of Varment Guard Environmental Services in Columbus, Ohio, as its May Hometown Heroes. Wildlife Manager Jason Maus and Residential Pest Manager Jeff East, along with their respective wives, Erin and Michele, volunteered during the 2007 Ohio State Fair for the debut of an unusual event: Wheelchair Athletes' "Roll for the Prize."

The southern sunshine isn't the only thing warming Florida's pest management professional industry these days — thanks to the warmth of two men's hearts adding an extra touch.

The film Rain Man opened many people's eyes to autism in 1988. But most of us probably didn't give autism much more thought upon leaving the theaters. Not so with Jim Maurer, owner of First Choice Termite and Pest Control in Winter Park, Fla., and Pest Control's August Hometown Hero.
