Hometown Heroes: John Dixon

1 Aug, 2006 By: Heather Gooch Pest Management Professional

John Dixon, regional inspections manager/vice president of sales and marketing for Walker's Termite & Pest Control in Abingdon, Md., is Pest Control's August Hometown Hero for his commitment to social responsibility. Dixon, a seven-year industry veteran, was hired by Walker's in 2003 to increase its residential sales. He did that — and more.

For the past three years, Walker's has donated 3 percent of each contract to one of four different charities. Each customer gets to choose where 3 percent of his or her payment goes, and the four charity options stay topical, rotating as needed. Current options include the Red Cross-Hurricane Katrina Fund, the UNICEF-African Famine Relief-Darfur, The Salvation Army Relief Services Fund and USO Servicemen's Retreat Fund.

Company president and founder William Walker has always been generous when it comes to helping others, Dixon adds.

Recently, Dixon added another program to Walker's lineup: doing pest and termite services at cost — and in some cases, no cost — for the families of fallen soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. With a service area that spans three offices and includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, it's no small feat.

"It's something we can do to help them out," Dixon says. "When we first started this, we thought, "Let's do a press release on it,' but decided: "No, let's just do this — it doesn't need to be part of our marketing. It's just the right thing to do."
