West Nile virus (WNV) affects almost every state in the nation. As professionals, simply recommending the use of diethyltoluamide (DEET)-type products as a deterrent is useful, but outdated. We need programs to protect you and your customers because this has become an emerging health issue. Three proactive measures to take include:

1. As part of your regular service, perform property inspections for standing water or habitats conducive to breeding. You’re likely spending most of your day outside in customers’ yards anyway.

2. Educate your customer and employees about the serious health risks.

3. Consider treating clothing (if the label allows) with permethrin before entering high-risk areas.

Remember, it’s never too early to start planning for mosquito control.
