A new Yale study found that garlic also functions as an indirect birth control for mosquitoes and other winged insects, an insight that could lead to eco-conscious pest control strategies.
Overview
The study took place in John Carlson‘s lab at Yale University where a research team examined 43 phytoscreens of fruits and vegetables, the only phytoscreen identified to halt mating in mosquitos was garlic.
“In this study, we started with fruit flies and then moved on to other species. And to our surprise, we found a natural compound in garlic that shuts down the mating process in these flies,” said Dr. John Carlson in a news release.
Following the discovery, it was time for the researchers to investigate whether it was the smell of garlic, or the taste. After separating the chemical compounds in the garlic purée it was found that one chemical, diallyl disulfide, is the culprit. It prohibits both mating and egg-laying.
The compound triggered an avoidance reaction in the mosquitoes taste organs as well as triggering changes in gene expression linked to feelings of satiety.
Why this information is important
Of course, many garden and home pest deterrents contain garlic compounds designed to have the same impact of decreased mating and reproduction. This particular research discovered the “why” of garlics impact.
Keeping in mind the ‘why’ opens the door to the discovery of other naturally occurring compounds that could prove even more effective and efficient for widespread eco-conscious pest control.
