Bald-faced hornets rank among the most aggressive wasp species. They are notorious for their painful stings. To effectively manage these pests, locating their nest is essential. These football-shaped structures are created from chewed-up wood fibers mixed with saliva.

Simply eliminating the hornets flying around won’t resolve the issue, as the nest is home to most of the colony, including the queen.

To locate a wasp’s nest, follow these five simple steps:

1. Schedule your observations for the early morning or late afternoon when hornet activity is lowest.
2. Inspect common nesting sites such as trees, shrubs or beneath overhangs.
3. Observe the flight paths of the hornets, as they typically travel directly to and from their nest.
4. Listen for the distinct buzzing sound, which can help guide you to the nest’s location.
5. Use binoculars and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while searching for nesting sites.
