The owner of a pest control company who decides to sell may not be the only person at the company to come out on top.
This year’s Pest Management Professional (PMP) Merger Survey shows that survey respondents believe a deal benefits employees, too. When asked, “Can merging with a larger pest management provider help an acquired business improve career opportunities and employee retention?” 62 percent agreed. Five years ago, that figure was 55 percent.
Because many pest control company owners are proud of the close relationships they have with their employees — many consider them family — they tend to seek out buyers who intend to treat employees as well as they did, if not better.
Another benefit may stem from the reputation and market reach of the acquiring company. When asked, “Can merging with a larger pest management provider help an acquired business improve marketing with the power of a bigger brand and budget?” 85 percent said yes. In 2014, 76 percent of respondents agreed. A larger company with a familiar name or a stellar public relations team will use their expertise to promote the company and attract new customers, which will help boost revenue.

When it comes to processes and policies, a merger with a larger company can help an acquired business access and implement proven processes and policies, according to 68 percent of those asked. Eleven years ago, only 52 percent of those questioned believed that statement. Pest control companies that rely on established protocols ensure consistency, professionalism and safety for all team members.
Despite these advantages to putting out the for-sale sign, PMP’s Merger Survey shows a sale may never happen for some pest control company owners. The statement, “Every business is for sale; the only real question is, for how much?” rings true for only 66 percent of those asked; 6 percent could not say for sure.

What could be holding them back? Perhaps an uncertain economy, troubling tax laws or a solid succession plan prevent them from jumping at the chance to move on. It’s a question every pest control company owner should ponder when the urge to merge strikes.
