NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Chris O’Donovan, a manager at Cooper Pest Control, Lawrenceville, NJ, wins the state’s first-ever cricket spitting contest with a spit of 28 ft., 5 in.

O’Donovan called the event “a fabulous experience,” and added he was glad he participated “before I had lunch.”

The contest was part of the New Jersey Pest Management Association’s 56th annual educational clinic, held in August at Rutgers Cook College.

Cricket spitting follows strict guidelines. Brown house crickets are frozen and slightly thawed at spitting time. They weigh between .45 and .55 grams. Contestants must spit crickets in a straight line, and the cricket must be entirely in the spitter’s mouth before spitting.

The top female contestant, Heather McNany of Paul’s Pest Control, Wildwood, NJ, spat her cricket 19 ft., 6 in.
