LONGVIEW, Texas — From the News Journal in Longview, Texas: Flea and termite infestations are on the rise, said Gregg County extension agent Dennis Smith.

Recent heavy rain and flooding are conducive to flea and termite development and proliferation, he said. The rainy weather patterns have exacerbated the pest problem.

“There’s been a big increase of fleas,” Smith said. “We’ve received a few calls about fleas on pets. It’s time for people to act now.”

Smith said fleas do not survive well outdoors in hot, sunny days, but thrive in moist, shaded spots near pet resting areas.

Flea and tick population reach their peak in May, he said. Ticks have not been as active as fleas so for far this season since fire ants have been able to curb the tick population; however, termites have, Smith said. Termites can cause significant damage to wood framed businesses and homes if not treated in time.

“If you notice termites swarming in your house, you need to call a professional and have them come out and look,” he said.
