Bed Bugs Linger in North Dakota Apartment Complex

From the Grand Forks Herald (N.D.) — Bed bugs have shown up again at an apartment building run by the Grand Forks Housing Authority.

The same building, which houses the elderly, disabled and those with low incomes, had a report of bedbugs in one apartment in March.

Executive Director Terry Hanson Hanson said an exterminator has been hired to kill the bloodsucking insects.

After the report of bedbugs in March, the affected apartment and surrounding units were treated.

“We felt that we did have it under control. We felt we did everything that had to be done,” Hanson said.

Ecolab, the company handling the extermination, met with residents to discuss their methods. Tenants were asked to be vigilant in watching for bedbugs and to clean their belongings.

A recent resurgence of the bugs has hit hotels and homes across the nation.

“There’s no class status on bedbugs,” Hanson said. “They’ll just attach themselves to any class out there and make themselves at home.”

Robert Derrick, owner of Complete Pest Control in East Grand Forks, said he’s received an increased number of bedbug calls in the past four years.

“That’s probably our No. 1 problem as exterminators — the one that everyone is paying attention to,” he said. “They can lay their eggs anywhere. They’re adaptable, and they can build up their resistance to chemicals,” he said.
