Before modern pest management, millions of people in Europe died of the Black Plague. It’s not widely understood that it’s actually the fleas carried by rats that transmitted the disease. Even though the U.S. presently uses numerous rodent control methods, six to 12 cases of Black Plague are reported yearly in New York City alone. Research shows the same strain of killer bacteria that caused the Black Plague and spread throughout the world in the mid 1800s, might have helped finish off the Roman Empire.
