New research in the Wildlife Society Bulletin reveals how vulnerable rotary-wing aircraft — such as Apache and Chinook helicopters — are to bird and other wildlife strikes.
More than 2,500 wildlife strikes were identified across the U.S. Armed Forces. Nearly one-third of the records included the type of animals involved, with birds accounting for 91% of the strikes. Further analysis revealed strikes were most common between September and November.
Economically, each strike cost the military between $12,184 and $337,281. Wildlife strikes also resulted in eight injuries and two fatalities from flight operations in the United States.
