NPMA: IgCC evaluates termite control barriers

npma_m-logo300FAIRFAX, VA—The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has defeated a second addition to the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) at the code hearings in Memphis. Click here to download a PDF about the IgCC, as well as another code change defeated by NPMA.

This second proposal would have required installation of a barrier during construction in all jurisdictions adopting “green” termite control. According to Marcia Duke, NPMA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, “It appears a plastic sheeting company is attempting to define ‘green’ termite control through the code change process, while working behind the scenes to develop a protocol for evaluation of plastic sheeting as a termite control tool.”

In a related action, acceptance criteria for use of plastic sheeting as a termite barrier is being reviewed by the International Code Council’s Evaluation Service. In written comments addressing the proposal, NPMA strongly recommended the Termiticide Scientific Review Panel (TSRP) — an independent group of leading U.S. termite researchers created for the evaluation of innovative termite control products — is a better group to resolve testing protocols for assessing termite control properties of plastic sheeting than the Code Council’s Evaluation Service.
