There are some real rodents in New York City, but the actual, lingering problem is the undetermined population of rats. In the video below, a courageous rat tries to bring a whole piece of pizza down the stairs into the subway. Whether this was actually Splinter bringing back a slice for Mikey and the rest of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remains unseen.

According to an article in the The New York Times, the rat population, while being a constant source of distress, has never been properly counted. While estimates range from an estimate of 15 million in 1949 to one rat for every resident, no definite answers exist.

Dealing with the resilient rat population has been the plight of every New York City mayor since the beginning. Created under Mayor Giuliani and broadened under Michael Bloomberg, a ‘rodent task force’ meets weekly. And for public employees, there is a three-day training program called ‘rodent academy’ to prepare them for dealing with the sometimes overwhelming problem.

Just another day in the life of a New Yorker? Let’s hear your thoughts about this little pizza smuggler.
