Treating bee and other pollinator accounts is very different from traditional pest control, a topic we delve into starting on p. 38. When they become pests, they are not to be controlled so much as removed, relocated and respected.

While we believe nearly every pest management professional (PMP) can offer this service if he or she is willing to put in the time, effort and resources, many of the extraction experts we interviewed are kind of a breed apart from the average PMP.

A little bit daredevil, a lot patient, they are embodied by Gotcha Pest Control’s Claude Griffin. He compares his extraction work to being like Winston “The Wolf” Wolfe, as portrayed by Harvey Keitel in the 1994 film “Pulp Fiction.” Not only does he enjoy being the cleanup man, combing through every crack and crevice until he unearths the root of the bee problem, but he’s often called in by colleagues to troubleshoot complex accounts.

“I put everyone at ease,” he says. “I make my money, and they get their client back on quarterly visits, trusting them again.”

This month not only plays host to Bed Bug Awareness Week (June 2-8), but also National Pollinator Week (June 17-23). We think they’re two important topics worth celebrating in our industry, and maybe we don’t celebrate pollinators enough.
