Turning to truckers to help stop the spread
Red (Solenopsis invicta) and black (S. richteri) imported fire ants are native to South America. In the 1930s, they were inadvertently introduced into the U.S. at the port of Mobile, Ala. These pests sting people, injure animals and damage crops. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services offers a brochure for long haul truck drivers that warns against picking up these hitchhikers.
