The Guarded Harvest Project receives positive feedback

Dan Baldwin BCE, REHS/RS, CCFS, CP/FS, PCQI and VP of Hawk’s Pest Control, recently returned from Kenya, where he is leading a large pest control research and implementation program alongside The Guarded Harvest Project.

Where is the project taking place?

David Njuguna, chairperson of Guarded Harvest, CBO, and a retired educator, has provided the space to serve as The Guarded Harvest Project’s Nakuru County headquarters at Francis Ndeithi’s flour mill. The mill is a large, clean space to secure all equipment and serve as a temporary training and education center. The Guarded Harvest has planned to set up a model farm, which will be large enough to support an education center, base of operations and eventually, community maize storage.

Putting thoughts into action

Throughout the visit, the Guarded Harvest team arrived with a plan to:

• Deploy GrainPro solar dryers and threshers
  • Working together to protect yields and prevent losses, the threshers quickly separate grain from the cob, speeding up the drying process and reducing labor. Because the equipment is mobile, it is able to be delivered directly to farms, speeding up the process further.
• Conduct soil tests
  • Guarded Harvest invested in advanced soil testing equipment to analyze nutrient levels, pH and other key indicators. Each sample was tied to GPS coordinates, creating the opportunity to build a detailed map of soil conditions across all sites.
• Distribute GrainPro hermetic storage bags
  • GrainPro provided additional cost support for hermetic storage bags to farmers in the test group, enhancing post-harvest protection.
• Conduct detailed research
  • Guarded Harvest created a robust, bilingual questionnaire serving as the first step in its full research initiative. The questionnaire was built for clarity, adaptability and local relevance.
