Batzner’s own Curtiss Duensing, aka “Hissing Hank,” served as the emcee of the event.

NEW BERLIN, WIS.—Madagascar hissing cockroaches raced again in the Milwaukee suburb of New Berlin, on Oct. 2 for the 12th consecutive year.

Jerry Batzner, president of the 66-year-old Batzner Pest Management Co., says his organization held its Annual Madagascar Hissing Cockroach Race at its New Berlin headquarters as part of its celebration of National Customer Service Week, Oct. 1-5.

On racing day, Batzner Pest Management customer service employees formed nine teams and each chose their favorite roach from the company collection. “Hissing Hank”—employee Curtiss Duensing wearing a cockroach costume—was the emcee. The roaches “galloped” along a customized, 8-ft. track built especially for the race.

Batzner employees urge their roaches to win the race.

“Prizes were awarded to the winning team, but even better, the company made a generous donation to the Ronald McDonald House in their names,” Batzner says.

Customer Service Week allows the company to recognize the important contributions made by their customer service professionals. Along with the race, the schedule of events for the week-long occasion included a cookout, a number of “shout out” forms posted around their offices recognizing individual employees for providing extraordinary customer service on a daily basis, and themed games and puzzles.

“This special week is not just an excuse for us to throw a party,” Batzner explains, noting that Customer Service Week, which began in 1988, is a national event recognizing the importance of customer service and honoring the people who practice it.  “We’re extremely proud of our own customer service people and are happy to recognize them for their valuable contributions to our organization. “
