Controlling spiders and other pests is easiest when following a step-by-step process. These steps are:
1. Inspect to gather information.
2. Prescribe a treatment strategy.
3. Communicate with the client.
4. Treat using effective techniques and materials.
5. Follow up to assess results.

Spider control may divide the first two steps of this process depending on which of the two primary groups of spiders — web-spinning or hunting spiders — is present. Each of the two groups requires a different control strategy.

Web-spinning spiders often create their webs in protected areas such as under eaves or soffits, in entryways, beneath decks, around windows, and in landscaping. When not on their web, these spiders are usually hiding in nearby cracks and crevices. The strategy for eliminating these spiders is relatively simple: Apply product directly to the spider as it rests on the web or in or on surrounding harborages using a pinstream or other direct application. Additionally, removing the web not only plays an important part in control, but provides a benchmark for subsequent inspections.

Control of hunting spiders can be more complex. These spiders are found in areas where they hunt — in landscaping mulch or vegetation such as monkey grass or ivy. Because they do not rely on a web to capture prey, they become constant moving targets for PMPs. Typical treatment of hunting spiders involves a thorough pesticide application to mulch and vegetation, as well as any gaps on the structure, especially beneath siding — always penetrating deep into protected areas where spiders hunt or hide.

For any spider control strategy to work, selecting the right product is essential. More often than not, the spider will not actually be in its web or in the vegetation at the time of application. The products you choose must, therefore, remain effective long after they are applied to ensure the spider will encounter the material.
