How much has insect behavior changed over the years? Not much, as a fossil found by Wang Bo of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology and his colleagues proves. The Economist reports an adult female insect that roamed the earth with the dinosaurs offers the “earliest evidence of ‘brood care,'” as her abdomen contains about 60 eggs and six first-instar nymphs are nearby. Check out the photo here. Fossils seldom preserve evidence of brood care, so this nearly 100 million-year-old specimen is especially notable.
