If you’re familiar with the unfortunate family’s experience, you can sleep easy tonight: Experts say snakes typically do not take up residence in homes, reports National Geographic. Rat snakes are “shy around people” so their recent home invasion is a “freak occurrence,” says Davidson College snake expert Michael Dorcas. Still, snakes have been known to slither into homes. In this case, they most likely found an ideal spot to den for the winter, according to Auburn University wildlife ecologist David Steen.
