Managing the contents of a space being treated for a bed bug infestation is vital to the success of the overall treatment. If a space is to be heat treated, it is not recommended to move any items within the treated space until the lethal temperature of 130°F is achieved. Disturbing the bed bugs prior to lethal heat will trigger the release of an alarm pheromone and cause the bugs to scatter.
Items that may be sensitive to heat, such as medicines and plants, may be moved to a refrigerator or other non-heated area. The high volume of air that will be moved around by fans during the heat treatment can cause damage by knocking items down. Thus, heat treatment professionals must reposition items to prevent harm.
