Meanwhile, we bring you live coverage from two other industry events happening virtually this week: CO2@Home (with live coverage from Senior Editor Diane Sofranec) and the National Pest Management Association’s Global Bed Bug Summit (with live coverage from Editor Heather Gooch).
Coalmarch, a provider of digital marketing and sales efficiency solutions for the pest control industry, hosted its annual CO2 conference virtually this year, naming it CO2@Home.
Coalmarch CEO and Triangle Pest Control Owner Donnie Shelton kicked off CO2@Home on Tues., Dec. 1. The annual meeting has gone virtual this year, and features presentations by experts to help attendees grow their pest control and lawn care businesses. “With COVID this year, we had to adapt, we had to overcome,” he said, which helped businesses in these industries do well despite the pandemic.
Dan Gordon, CPA, managing partner, PCO Bookkeepers and PMP columnist, discussed how to measure the financial health of your business. “Every company should have recurring revenue woven into its core,” he said. “During jolts to the economy, all the one-time revenue dries up. For the most part, you’re not losing as much revenue when it’s recurring.”
During the virtual event, Tim Pollard, president of Arrow Exterminators, shared marketing ideas designed to help a pest control company become a household name. Presenting a consistent message to your audience is key, and helps establish credibility, he said.

2020 Global Bed Bug Summit
The 2020 Global Bed Bug Summit took place virtually Dec. 1-3, this year. The National Pest Management Association’s annual event is designed to provide pest management professionals (PMPs) with the information from legal, technical, business, and customer-oriented perspectives, so they can not only eliminate bed bug issues, but also create an environment of trust between themselves and their customers.
Originally set to take place in Denver, Colo., the virtual Summit featured a 24/7 trade show and recertification credits with no travel required.
In his opening remarks, BedBug Central’s Rob DiJoseph, let it slip that his company will have a new name in January: Stay tuned.
Dr. Chow-Yang Lee of University of California, Riverside’s Department of Entomology kicked off the Global Bed Bug Summit presentations with a look at the “Global Perspective of Insecticide Resistance in Bed Bugs.”
Joey Hoke, ACE, with American Pest Management, and Jen Fox with Terminix, tag teamed a lively discussion on how to build a top-notch bed bug program. Among the helpful hints: Try using a lint roller on light-color furniture to swipe a nymph or egg.
Dr. Dong-Hwan Choe of the University of California, Riverside’s Department of Entomology teamed up with Bayer Pest Management & Public Health for a new pheromone technology for bed bug monitoring. Interestingly, this technology is similar to what’s used for home pregnancy tests!
During the virtual event, Dr. Karen Vail with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture’s Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology offered attendees an overview about bed bug monitoring. She noted that a cost calculator is in the works for PMPs and property managers.
During a panel discussion, Mike Panichi outlined Platinum Pest Solutions‘ “Safe Space Protocol,” which outlines precautions customers must take for bed bug treatment during COVID-19.
