Stinging insects often make a pest management professional’s (PMP’s) Top 10 list. Many customers are fearful of stings, reporting anything that remotely resembles a bee or wasp. It is your job as the professional to know which species warrant control and in what circumstances.

For example, a bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) nest high in a tree far from the actual home may cause unease, but does not necessarily need to be taken down. A bald-faced hornet nest built on the porch light next to the back door, however, needs to go.

Even the most beneficial species may need control measures. Understand the advantages of pesticide formulations to get stinging insects under control in the quickest and safest manner.

When dealing with exposed nests, liquid residuals can be a good option. Set your sprayer to pinstream to allow sufficient distance between yourself and the nest. Spray the nest directly, then calmly walk away. Liquid residuals also are useful for preventive treatments. But like all aspects of pest control, there is no single solution for all situations.
