Termites are prolific pests that can cause extensive damage to wooden structures in a short period. It is crucial for PMPs to understand the nature and behavior of these insects to effectively control termite presence, specifically in attics. When a termite problem is detected, identify the source and eliminate it by using the appropriate chemical treatments and/or baits.

Attics can be very susceptible to poor ventilation — and become perfect environments for termites as a result. Termites thrive in moist environments, so it’s important to fix any ventilation problems such as bathroom, kitchen or laundry vents exhausting into the attic; covered soffit vents; or less than 1 square foot of ventilation per 300 square feet of attic space.

Air-sealing the attic floor from the interior and exterior penetrations also is vital to keep access points and moisture intrusion at bay. Making sure the attic is vented properly is the key to keeping the attic dry and unattractive to termites. In addition, consider using termite-resistant materials when renovating the customer’s home to minimize any future termite infiltration.
