Pheromones play a crucial role in the world of stored product pests (SPP), serving various purposes including attraction, repulsion and communication. PMPs should recognize the significance of pheromones and utilize them as a monitoring tool to track these pests effectively. However, it is important to understand that most pheromone monitors are not a treatment method themselves; they only serve as a means of monitoring the pest population.
Pheromone monitors, although highly effective, can have limitations. Most can only capture a fraction of the overall pest population. Therefore, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the pest infestation and devise suitable control strategies, employing multiple monitors in strategic locations is best.
If possible, set pheromone monitors out in a grid pattern to gain optimal results. Studies have found that utilizing grid patterns improves coverage, data accuracy, consistency and efficiency when compared to setting pheromone monitors out randomly. To maximize your grid systems, be sure to consult recommended coverage on the labels of your chosen monitors.
