Using pheromones to monitor stored product pests

Pheromones play a crucial role in the world of stored product pests (SPP), serving various purposes including attraction, repulsion and communication. PMPs should recognize the significance of pheromones and utilize them as a monitoring tool to track these pests effectively. However, it is important to understand that most pheromone monitors are not a treatment method themselves; they only serve as a means of monitoring the pest population.

Pheromone monitors, although highly effective, can have limitations. Most can only capture a fraction of the overall pest population. Therefore, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the pest infestation and devise suitable control strategies, employing multiple monitors in strategic locations is best.

If possible, set pheromone monitors out in a grid pattern to gain optimal results. Studies have found that utilizing grid patterns improves coverage, data accuracy, consistency and efficiency when compared to setting pheromone monitors out randomly.
