Stored product pests (SPP) infestations can surface quickly when adult populations emerge from infested food, pet food or bird seed. The search for the source of the problem involves trying to find not just the adults, but typically the larvae and pupae as well. Given that most of these pests can go through complete development in a few weeks, the problem can worsen quickly.
To manage SPP infestations, a thorough inspection, monitoring with traps, and a thorough cleaning (including the disposal of infested products) are key components.
For controlling an active infestation, and for extended residual protection, amorphous silica is a great alternative. Silica dust has proven to be highly effective on bed bugs and other crawling pests, and is just as effective on SPP. It is an extreme desiccant that destroys the waxy cuticle of insects, delivering rapid control. Silica dust is long-lasting, non-repellent, odorless, non-staining and very low in toxicity.
It can be applied as a dust or wettable powder spray in cracks and crevices, and along the edges of cupboards, closets, pantries, shelving units and storage areas. Other labeled areas include wall voids, drawer wells, and voids beneath cabinets to deliver long-lasting protection.
