Location determines treatments for stinging insects

Location plays a pivotal role in determining how to effectively manage stinging insect nests. Whether nestled in the ground, mulch, against structures, picnic tables or playground equipment, the nest’s site dictates the approach.

First, determine whether your current pest applicator license permits control. Regulations vary across states, with some imposing maximum treatment distances from structures or restricting exterior treatments for indoor pests. Some states also may require a different license to treat stinging insect nests in lawns or turf.

Once regulatory considerations are addressed, consider control options. While exclusion and nest removal are nonchemical methods, many situations necessitate chemical interventions. Adhere strictly to label instructions and prioritize PPE, especially when working at heights. Being up on a ladder is not the time to decide stings are “no big deal.”

Finally, be aware of the limitations of chemical solutions, such as potential staining on siding or challenges with long-distance application. Exercise caution in areas frequented by children, pets or nontarget organisms to mitigate unintended consequences.

By understanding regulatory constraints and employing appropriate control measures, PMPs can effectively mitigate stinging insect infestations while ensuring safety and minimizing environmental impact.
