While they may look very similar, there are some key differences between bed bugs and bat bugs. These species are related, but only one — the bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a major pest to humans.

If you are dealing with an “unusual” bed bug infestation, don’t forget about bat bugs because they may be the culprit.

Here are two tips to help tell the difference:

1. Look for population distribution in the structure. If you are seeing more activity near the ceiling, or bugs crawling along walls and in open areas instead of hiding around the bed or sleeping areas, then you will want to investigate further for bat bugs. Inspect attic and wall voids to look for any evidence of bats roosting. Then, for a firm confirmation, collect and identify insect specimens.

2. Use a microscope or other magnification. Look at the pronotum, or structure directly behind the head, and note the hairs on it. For bat bugs, these hairs are much longer; it’s very noticeable when both species are side by side.

If you are dealing with bat bugs, you need to focus on bat removal first. Any lingering bat bugs can then be vacuumed, and a residual product applied.
