DIY pest control may seem like a quick, cost-saving solution for homeowners, but it’s often an uphill battle that pest management professionals (PMPs) are uniquely positioned to reframe.
A recent HelloNation article featuring pest control expert Chris David of Recon Pest Control Inc. highlights a key reality: most DIY approaches only address what’s visible. Sprays and traps might knock down surface activity, but they rarely reach the hidden nests and breeding sites behind walls, under floors or in voids. That leaves the root of the infestation untouched and free to grow.
Shift the narrative away from DIY

This is where PMPs can shift the conversation with customers. DIY solutions are typically broad, one-size-fits-all products, while effective pest control depends on accurate identification. Misidentifying a pest can lead homeowners to use the wrong treatment entirely, wasting money and potentially making the problem worse by driving pests deeper into the structure or accelerating reproduction.
Another important point to communicate is the “false sense of control” DIY products create. Initial results may look promising, but without addressing entry points or environmental conditions like moisture, food sources and clutter, pests are likely to return. Professionals, on the other hand, take a more comprehensive approach that includes exclusion, sanitation recommendations and targeted treatments.
Rodents are a particularly strong example. Homeowners may set traps or use bait, but without sealing access points, new rodents will continue to enter. In some cases, improper bait use can even create additional issues, such as odors from rodents dying in inaccessible areas.
There’s also a safety angle PMPs can emphasize. Improper pesticide use, whether it is under- or over-applied, can be ineffective at best and hazardous at worst, especially for households with children or pets. Overuse can even contribute to pesticide resistance, making future control more difficult.
Create the opportunity to convert
Ultimately, one of the strongest selling points for professional service is cost over time. Many homeowners spend hundreds of dollars cycling through DIY products without resolving the issue. Meanwhile, infestations continue to expand, increasing the risk of structural damage and health concerns.
Explaining these key points to customers aids in overall understanding of why what they did may not have worked or even worsened the problem, turning the situation into an opportunity for PMPs to convert.
