Off the Cuff: Camaraderie, Competition and Common Goals

The September issue of Pest Management Professional (PMP) celebrates the PMP Hall of Fame Class of 2014. Like those who’ve been inducted in years past, these individuals have done more than contribute to the industry of pest management. In various ways, they’ve changed it. Whether it’s legislative triumphs, cutting-edge research or improving the public face of the industry, their contributions are considerable. The Class of 2014 is comprised of risk takers, whose successes (as well as failures — an essential component of learning) inform and inspire the generations that follow them.

Selflessness is an asset I — as a peripheral advocate reporting on the industry for the industry — see as a common thread running through the veins of countless pest management professionals (PMPs), from technicians to owners and managers to researchers and even corporations. The spirit of working toward a common goal is evident when you fill a room with the men and women who make their living in the pest management realm. This is not to say that PMP competition isn’t fierce, but that doesn’t limit the sense of camaraderie that pervades the industry.

As we all gear up for NPMA PestWorld 2014 in Orlando, Fla. next month, keep this in mind as you make your way around the convention floor. You’ll see old friends reuniting, colleagues sharing ideas and people connecting in a way that only those who share a common passion or profession can.

I’m looking forward to it, too, so by all means, swing by PMP’s booth and say hello.
