When using wood-based, expanded-trigger rodent snap traps, pest management professionals (PMPs) must set them properly to achieve required results. What some PMPs aren’t aware of is a benefit of these style traps: Their sensitivity can be adjusted. Many snap traps have an “F” and “S” on the trigger, which stands for firm and sensitive — not fast and slow as some mistakenly believe. Where PMPs set and place the locking bar will determine the sensitivity. If PMPs ever had a difficult time sliding a rat trap into an area without it going off, it was probably because the trap was set on the sensitive setting. PMPs should use the firm setting when placing traps in areas prone to vibration from equipment or tow motors. They should use the sensitive setting to catch elusive rodents. Most of the time, however, it’s best to simply set the traps with the locking bar in the middle.
