CARROLLTON, TEXAS—Jennifer Yarto has purchased a South Texas MosquitoNix franchise, expanding mosquito control in a region that was among the hardest-hit by West Nile Virus (WNV) last year. MosquitoNix South Texas will protect people from mosquitoes who live across the valley including Corpus Christi, South Padre Island, Laredo, Brownsville and McAllen, Texas.

In 2012, a third of all WNV cases in the United States were reported from Texas — 1,739 WNV cases in people, including 76 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“We have seen a dramatic increase in demand for mosquito control in Texas. Last year’s West Nile Virus outbreak was the largest since 2003. That is why speed and expansion of mosquito control coverage is of the essence to protect families from not just annoying bugs, but also life-threatening mosquito-borne illnesses,” says Dan O’Neal, Chairman and CEO of FEMO Group Franchise System, MosquitoNix’s parent company. “We are impressed with how quickly Jennifer has moved to provide mosquito control services so that families and businesses across the valley can enjoy the outdoors safely.”

Mosquito control is a fast-growing industry, thanks to changing weather patterns across North America and the emerging threat of mosquito-borne illnesses.  According to the CDC, WNV is now endemic to the United States; peak time for the spread of the virus will be from July through October, surging in August.  In 2012, 48 states reported WNV infections in people, birds or mosquitoes. As of Dec. 11, 2012, a total of 5,387 cases of WNV in people, including 243 deaths, had been reported to CDC.

“With the increase of West Nile Virus cases across South Texas, Texans are looking for ways to protect their families, pets, businesses and outdoor lifestyles,” says Yarto. “Partnering with a trusted brand like MosquitoNix allows us to provide the most effective mosquito control solution across the valley.”

“We are also excited that Jennifer Yarto is our first franchisee under our new strategic expansion plan that makes MosquitoNix available in more markets across the nation,” O’Neal notes. “Our goal is to open 50 new franchises in 2013, and as many as 200 by the end of 2015.”
